Special programming for Halloween!

...

Happy Halloween! If you're going to be handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, make sure to take WMCK.FM with you on Oct. 31! We'll have a full evening of special Halloween programming.

Following "Radio 9" from 12 to 3 p.m. and "Goffus' Golden Oldies" from 3 to 5 p.m., we'll have classic old-time radio shows with spooky or Halloween themes.

We'll start out with classic comedy from "Fibber McGee and Molly" and Jack Benny, followed by "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" and episodes of the science fiction classics, "Suspense" and "X-Minus-One."

Then, at 10 o'clock, it's the famous October 30, 1938 episode of "The Mercury Radio Theater" which dramatized H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds," and panicked thousands of people, including locally here in the Mon Valley.

If you're going trick-or-treating, or to a Halloween party, don't forget that you can take WMCK.FM with you, wherever you go, with our free Android app, or by tuning in on your smartphone using the free TuneIn app.

Approaching a normal schedule again!

Another update on our computer crash ...

We are getting back to something like a normal schedule! Thanks for your patience. Our music selection is still a bit limited, but news updates have resumed.

Make sure to listen to new episodes of "Goffus Golden Oldies" at 6 to 8 a.m. Tuesday, 7 p.m. Thursday and 3 p.m. Saturday; along with "Juneberry Road" with Bob Janis at 7 p.m. Sunday, 7 p.m. Wednesday and 1 p.m. Thursday.

Bear with us

On Thursday and Friday, you may have heard two songs playing at the same time, or the stream starting and stopping. We hit a bit of a computer glitch, and we're working on fixing it.

So we're suspending our usual format for a little while and doing maintenance; right now, we're doing an oldies marathon until Sunday night, when we have our first episode of Juneberry Road with Bob Janis!

Bear with us. And thanks for supporting the new sound of the Mon Valley, WMCK.FM!

Juneberry Road begins Sunday, Oct. 25

Beginning Oct. 25, join us every Sunday night from 7 to 9 for an enticing trip down Juneberry Road where you can hear sweet-sounding and spirited acoustic music.

Coming to you from the hills of southwestern Pennsylvania, Juneberry Road winds along seamlessly through Bluegrass, Folk, Old-Time, and Singer/Songwriter traditions and whatever other goodies host Bob Janis finds in his musical backpack.

If you miss the live show on Sunday, rebroadcasts will air from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays and 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursdays on the new sound of the Mon Valley ... WMCK.FM.

Now playing on WMCK.FM: Mac DeMarco

All information supplied by the record label:

Mac DeMarco’s Another One was conceived and recorded entirely by Mac in a short period of time between a relentless tour schedule. At his new place in Far Rockaway, Queens — a neighborhood as east as you can possibly be before hitting Long Island — you can live in relative isolation despite technically still being in New York City. This left Mac with nothing more to do with his down time than to make music.

Another One is an eight track release of brand new songs, freshly written for this release and each of which expand the arsenal of Mac’s already impressive catalog.

It’s odd that despite working at the same pace as artists like Creedence, The Byrds and The Rolling Stones, coupled with an equally unending schedule of touring, press and recording, Mac is still labeled as a slacker.

With two full-lengths and two EPs released and hundreds of sold out shows performed in the last several years, a recent late night television debut on Conan following a special guest performance on The Eric Andre Show, it seems, as Mac DeMarco nears his 25th birthday, there’s not a slack bone in the man’s body, besides maybe his a penchant for wearing comfortable clothes.

McKeesport's home for the Saturday Light Brigade

Starting Oct. 10, WMCK.FM Internet Radio is proud to become McKeesport's home for The Saturday Light Brigade, one of America's most unique, and longest-running, public radio shows, broadcast live from the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh.

The affliation is especially appropriate because SLB is also a partner with the McKeesport-based Consortium for Public Education as well as Propel School McKeesport. WMCK.FM will provide the first locally based outlet for content recorded by K-12 students in Mon Valley area schools.

Launched in 1978, The Saturday Light Brigade is a Saturday morning public radio program that blends acoustic music, live performances by youth and adults, participatory puzzles, on-air telephone calls, and interviews with other community-based nonprofits serving youth and families.

Larry Berger serves as host and executive director.

Programming grew substantially between 1990 and 2000, as SLB built a strong and loyal audience, winning 10 local, state and national awards. SLB launched a website in 1993 and, in 1996, created a printed newsletter of puzzles and games for families with a circulation of 10,000. The program scope expanded again in 1996, when SLB began conducting technical and self-expression workshops for children and youth from 8 to 18 years of age, including in McKeesport.

You'll hear SLB live from 6 a.m. to 12 noon on WMCK.FM, but you can tune in any time you like at http://slbradio.org, where it's "Always Saturday."

Additional content from SLB's parent organization, non-profit SLB Radio Productions, airs at other times of the week on WMCK.FM. WMCK.FM is airing public-service announcements recorded by McKeesport kids throughout its normal programming day.

In addition, WMCK.FM is broadcasting episodes of "Crossing Fences," a series of conversations between community leaders and young African-American men, at 1 p.m. Sundays and 5 p.m. Thursdays.

Now playing on WMCK.FM: Moa Holmsten

Bruised Arms & Broken Rhythm

The songs of Bruce Springsteen might seem like an odd choice for the Swedish recording artist, Moa Holmsten. After fronting the heavy metal band, Meldrum, and then releasing two dynamic and avant-garde albums of her own songs (Do You Want Me, Death? and All Blade, No Handle)... Moa Holmsten and Tony Naima went into the studio in 2013 and emerged with a startlingly creative reworking of the Springsteen classic, "Badlands." They had such a good time creating this cover song, they decided to try another... and another... and another. In the end, they had completed fourteen tunes spanning across Springsteen's entire career... from the obscure to some of his most well known... but always in a completely fresh and original way.

Holmsten and Naima are not the typical die-hard fans of Bruce Springsteen one would expect after hearing their carefully crafted and respectful interpretations of his songs. As Moa says, "We have always respected Springsteen... but I believe the fact that we are not intense and longtime followers of his work has been essential from the beginning. We could discover new songs and re-discover older ones, and work on them with a unique perspective. We could be brave and courageous, while not letting old emotions or presumed expectations stand in our way." The resulting musical creations ended up all over the stylistic map (from the current pop sound of "Dancing In The Dark" and "Tougher Than The Rest" to the rustic and organic "Highway 29" and "Sad Eyes" to the haunting and spare "Streets Of Fire" and "You're Missing"), and each evolved into a life of its own.

Holmsten offers further insight into the project by saying, "I have compared this whole recording experience to falling in love with someone. Getting to know someone for the first time. The first fumbling steps. A person with a history and a past. The last thing you want is to be told from other people what kind of person he or she is. You want to find out for yourself. To see the side of this person that nobody else has seen. This is why I have consistently refused to read articles, books and interviews with Springsteen. I wanted to find out for myself. My own version of an American icon. Not the typical portrayal of him. And that, in a way, can't be questioned. This is how his songs spoke to me. Our relationship slowly progressed, and I have now totally fallen in love with him. I hope that it's mutual..."
