Fund Drive: Your Support is Needed

I really hate asking for money, but we’re at a critical point.

Take a look at the numbers. More than 40,000 people tuned into Tube City Online Radio last year.

If everyone who listened had given us $1, we would never need to ask for money. But in reality, only a small percentage of people ever donate — usually as a thank-you for posting a death notice on our obituary page.

If it wasn’t for support for a few faithful donors — among them, the G.C. Murphy Co. Foundation, the Bill Persson family, the Flynn Family Foundation, Larry and Rikki Berger, and Eric and Judy Wisniewski — we’d be in big trouble.

As it is, we’ve taken two big financial hits recently. One of our longtime donors says they need to cut back their support by about $100 per month.

Royalties for playing music have gone up about 40 percent. We also now must pay for a service to file reports with the royalty-collecting organizations — that’s costing us $50 per month. (You may have noticed that several local Internet radio stations have gone out of business because they can no longer afford the costs.)

Adding all of that up — we need to raise another $500 a month or so, or we’re not going to be able to continue. We have a small reserve fund right now but it’s not going to last.

If you are financially able, and would like to make a gift, please consider doing so.

Donations may be made by check or money order to:

If you think this is important, we very much could use your support. Your $50 or $100 gift goes directly to paying expenses — I don’t take any kind of payment from this website, and neither do any of our board members or officers.

If we could raise an extra $5,000 to $10,000 this year, we’d be OK.

We are recognized as a tax-exempt organization by the Internal Revenue Service, so your gift may be tax-deductible as a charitable contribution.

If you have a business that is looking to make a contribution, or if you have a charitable foundation that could donate money to help us, please reach out.

Thank you for your continued support of our organization.

The importance of Internet radio

Tube City Online Radio will be celebrating its eighth anniversary later this year --- we launched in October 2015. What is the importance of Internet radio? Producer and programmer has some thoughts that he's posted on the Airtime.Pro website:

The history of Internet radio is a tale of innovation and perseverance. From music and talk shows to podcasts and live broadcasts, online radio has become an indispensable tool for the delivery of information and entertainment ...

From its humble beginnings in the 1990s to its current status as an indispensable tool for music, information, and entertainment, internet radio has come a long way. With new trends emerging all the time, there’s no telling what the future holds. But one thing is for sure – it will continue to play an important role in our daily lives for many years to come.

Doug Goffus, 1949-2021

Doug Goffus, longtime Tube City Community Media Inc. board member, former board chair and host of "Goffus Golden Oldies" passed away Dec. 9 following a brief illness.

Doug was one of our earliest board members at Tube City Community Media Inc. and was instrumental in launching our Internet radio station, now known as Tube City Online Radio. He was a dedicated volunteer and was willing to devote many hours of unpaid work to Tube City Community Media.

Doug also was an excellent sounding board for ideas and everyone at Tube City Online came to appreciate his no-B.S. responses.

Doug had a long career in the federal government, both as an active member of the armed services and as an employee of several different departments, and also lent his talents to radio stations in Virginia and WRCT-FM in Pittsburgh.

We were very flattered that he volunteered his time with us and we will miss him.
