"Not Your Average" holiday cheer from WMCK.FM

McKeesport-based Internet radio station WMCK.FM has scheduled several special Christmas-themed programs for the week of Dec. 20, including a courthouse concert by musicians from McKeesport Area High School, a religious service from St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and McKeesport's Voice of Vision Ministries, and "Not Your Average Christmas Show" featuring unusual holiday rock, blues and folk songs.

Tune into WMCK.FM on Wednesday, Dec. 16 from 9 to 11 p.m. for "Not Your Average Christmas Show," hosted by Chris Stillwell.

"Not Your Average Christmas Show" features a variety of unusual holiday songs, including carols and religious music, from artists not usually associated with the Christmas season, including Yo La Tengo, John Prine, Tom Waits, Sufjan Stevens and Bela Fleck and the Fleck-Tones.

Pittsburgh's Joe Negri is also represented on "Not Your Average Christmas Show," as are '50s R&B artists such as Oscar McLollie And His Honey Jumpers and Motown stars like Stevie Wonder.

The show will repeat from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20 and from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 24.

"A Courthouse Concert" --- featuring musicians from McKeesport Area High School --- will air at 12 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, and 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 24.

Recorded Dec. 4 at Allegheny County Courthouse, the concert features selections performed by the McKeesport Area High School Orchestra and the MAHS Brass Ensemble.

Special Thanksgiving programming!

On Thanksgiving, we'll have special old-time radio programming, beginning at 8 a.m., and including two great stories from Jean Shepherd, whose writings inspired the holiday classic movie, "A Christmas Story."

From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., it's classic comedy, with Thanksgiving themed episodes of "The Jack Benny Program," "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show," "The Mel Blanc Show," "The Abbott and Costello Show," "Lum and Abner" and "The Life of Riley."

From 1 to 3 p.m., travel down folk music highways with Bob Janis on "Juneberry Road," and at 3 p.m., it's "The Rick Smith Show."

At 4 p.m., we're back into old-time radio, with a 1958 episode of "Gunsmoke" and a 1951 episode of "The Cavalcade of America."

At 5 p.m., it's "Neighborhood Voices," with an interview of former Penn State Greater Allegheny Chancellor Dr. Curtiss Porter, then stay tuned for Thanksgiving themed episodes of "Jeff Regan, Investigator," "The Life of Riley," "Mutual Family Theater" and "The Adventures of Sam Spade."

From 7 to 9 p.m., catch up with Doug Goffus on "Goffus Golden Oldies," and at 9 p.m., we have two broadcasts of Jean Shepherd's radio show from WOR in New York City, in which he recounts some Thanksgiving mis-adventures.

Then, it's "Cavalcade of America," with an episode entitled "Tisquantum, Strange Friend of the Pilgrims," followed by CBS's classic "You Are There: The Sailing of the Mayflower" and a 1947 episode of "Casey: Crime Photographer."

Doug Goffus features Christmas tunes

It's that time of the year again for the annual Christmas shows. This year there will be more to choose from.

On Doug Goffus' "Goffus Golden Oldies," Christmas Programs will begin on Tuesday morning, 6 a.m., Dec. 1, with Encore airings at 7 p.m. on Thursdays and 3 p.m. on Saturdays, through and including Jan. 2, 2016.  This show will focus on older material and songs that you don't often hear on the radio.

"Also, the show will feature a 'splash' of local Pittsburgh Artists at their Christmas Holiday best," Doug says. "Please log on to WMCK.FM and click on the "listen" icon and choose your listening platform.

"Goffus Golden Oldies offers a new show every week with multiple listening opportunities throughout the week so you have a choice of a convenient time to listen," he says. "Thank you for listening and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!"
